Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour is one of the world's great urban waterfronts, a place where the old and new collide in spectacular fashion.
We arrive at the harbour just as the sun is setting, the sky turning from blue to pink to deep purple. The skyscrapers on both sides of the water are beginning to light up, their windows glowing like jewels.
At eight o'clock, the Symphony of Lights begins, a nightly show where the buildings on both sides of the harbour are illuminated in a coordinated display. Lasers shoot across the water, and music plays from speakers along the waterfront. It is cheesy and spectacular in equal measure.
After the show, we take the Star Ferry across the harbour, a journey that costs less than a dollar but offers million-dollar views. The ferry is a Hong Kong institution, a link between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island that has been running for over a century.
On the other side, we wander through the streets of Central, where glass towers loom over traditional markets and street food stalls. Hong Kong is a city of contrasts, where ancient traditions coexist with cutting-edge modernity, and the energy is electric.
