The Pacific Coast Highway is one of the world's great drives, a ribbon of asphalt that hugs the California coast for over a thousand miles.
We start in San Francisco, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge in the early morning fog. The road south is spectacular from the first mile, winding through redwood forests and past rocky headlands where the Pacific crashes against the shore.
Big Sur is the heart of the drive, a stretch of coast so dramatic it almost defies belief. The road clings to cliffs hundreds of feet above the ocean, and every turn reveals a new vista. We stop at every pullout, unable to resist the views.
Further south, the landscape softens. The rugged cliffs give way to sandy beaches and gentle hills. We pass through Santa Barbara and Malibu, where the road runs right along the beach and surfers dot the waves.
By the time we reach San Diego, we have driven through a dozen different landscapes, each more beautiful than the last. The Pacific Coast Highway is not just a road, it is a journey through the heart of California.
